Marge
America's Ace of Aces, Maj. Richard Ira Bong
Bong is credited with 40 aerial victories and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Unfortunately, Bong was killed while testing Lockheed's new P-80 Jet fighter in 6 Aug. 1945. Bong's sweethert Marge Vattendahl, had given him a wallet size graduation photo and had it blown up to fit on the nose of his P-38 along with the name "Marge" in script painted red with a white outline. The photo was black and white, tinted with dyes for a colorized look. With Marge Bong Drucker's permission, we were given a copy of that same photo and recreated this exact look for our panels. The panels were signed on 11 September,1999 and partial proceeds will help fund the new Richard I. Bong Heritage Center in Superior, WI.
